Indonesian Hero: Marie Thomas

So for this entry, I want to tell you all about my favorite hero, Marie Thomas.

Marie Thomas is the first physician of women in Indonesia. She founded the first midwifery school in Sumatra and became the first doctor who introduced the new contraceptive method in Indonesia as IUD. 

Marie Thomas was born in Likupang, North Sulawesi on February 17, 1896. While a child, he had moved to the area of his parents. At that time a first women's pharmacist in the Netherlands, Charlotte Jocobs supported Marie to get a scholarship for the Indonesian doctor's prospective. At that time Marie had just graduated from an European school in Manado. 

In 1912, Marie was accepted at the School of Training of Natural Physicians (Stovia). The school is before it is only devoted to men. Marie passed 1922 as the first woman graduated from Stovia with the Indisch Arts title (Indies Doctor). Marie's graduation achievement was even announced by a newspaper in the Netherlands. Marie then started the practice at Cipto Mangunkusumo RS which was then called the School of Training of Natural Physicians (STOVIA). She then moved to Medan, Padang, and Manado. Marie then returned to Jakarta and worked at RS Cipto Mangunkusumo, Grown Hospital made by the SOVIA Foundation. SOVIA (Studiefonds Voor Opleiding Van Vrouwelijke Inlandsche Artsen) is a club to form a study fund for Education Doctor's Indigenous Education who provides scholarships on Marie. 

In March 16, 1929, she married a doctor, Mohammad Joesoef from Padang. Marie then moved to Padang with her husband. And served as a health care community in a hospital in Padang. She became the first doctor who introduced a new contraceptive method in Indonesia like IUD. In some reports mentioned if Marie is known as a generous physicist, and providing medical services to those who are unable to have to pay. Marie Thomas returned to Jakarta and joined a political party that one of its members is the Indonesian Hero of Sam Ratulangi. Marie and her husband then settled in the Bukittinggi and founded the first midwifery school in Sumatra. The school became the second midwifery school in Indonesia. While being a doctor, she often conducted research in the field of gynecology and midwifery. She also often helps women who have difficulty in labor. In addition to the doctor, Marie Thomas is also the first gynecologist and the midwifery in Indonesia.

So that's all about her. She is a heroine because she fight for her dream. She became the first doctor in Indonesia and inspired us to reach our dream too. Remember to never give up on what you want and what you like to do!
